Li Chi Hsiang School of Tai Chi Chuan
for Health and Self Defence

Our lineage

Tai Chi Chuan can only be learned first-hand from a good teacher who can demonstrate the principles and the applications of the Art.
Lineage holders are selected teachers who are entrusted with the responsibility of passing on the lineage while ensuring that all transmissions of the Art are upheld.

Roman Czerniawsky
Co-founder and Principal
Li Chi Hsiang School of Tai Chi Chuan, New South Wales

For more than 30 years Sifu Roman Czerniawsky has been studying and teaching all aspects of Tai Chi Chuan, as passed on from his teacher, Sifu John Hartley.

He has taught numerous students to a very high level, including health professionals (doctors, physiotherapists and massage therapists).

Sifu Roman believes in maintaining the utmost integrity of the art of Tai Chi Chuan, adhering to the timeless principles of the Tai Chi Classics.

Importantly, Sifu Roman teaches the whole art, including the martial art applications, internal energy development and the philosophy behind the art.

A practitioner of martial arts for over 45 years, Roman's long-time interest in health and body alignment has led him to study and practice remedial and therapeutic massage, Feldenkrais and Bowen technique. For many years he ran a successful clinic and looked after various sports teams.

Roman has also led a successful eight-week pilot program for Spinal Rehabilitation Patients by the Prince of Wales Hospital, Sydney, in 2008. This program explored the application of the principles of Tai Chi Chuan in therapeutic practice and the published results have been presented to medical specialists from across Australia.

Roman also led a 2010 program for spinal injury patients run by ParaQuad (Paraplegic & Quadraplegic Association of NSW - www.paraquad.org.au).

Roman's teaching expertise and experience is highly sought after by other Tai Chi organisations. He has been in demand to train the senior trainers of Tai Chi schools and to conduct workshops for other Tai Chi organisations.

Stephen Duncombe
New South Wales

Stephen Duncombe has studied under Sifu Roman Czerniawsky for many years and has also had the great good fortune to learn from Sifu Roman's teacher, Sifu John Hartley and from Sifu Darren Cox.

In his teachers' faithful transmission of the philosophy, principles and practices of Tai Chi Chuan he has found a complete art that embodies a balance of physical, mental and spiritual. Under the ongoing guidance of his teachers, he endeavours to pass on to other students the many benefits he has found Tai Chi Chuan has brought to his daily life.

The Li Chi Hsiang School of Tai Chi Chuan follows the teachings of Professor Cheng Man Ching (1901-1975) and traces its lineage back to him and through him to the origins of the art with the founder of Yang style Tai Chi Chuan, Yang Lu Chan (1799-1873).
The following chart details this progression.
