A plain english guide
to Tai Chi Chuan

So much has been written about the art of Tai Chi Chuan – not all of it accurate, some of it seemingly contradictory and even downright confusing. So, here is a short guide to some of the health benefits of practicing the principles of the Art, without any esoteric or obscure talk.

Stop crippling yourself!

Much of the pain and crippling injury that many people try to cope with every day can be alleviated or even avoided altogether by letting the body do what it does naturally – HEAL!

That's right. The human body is a self-healing organism. Injure it and it will try to repair the damage. But it won't heal properly if we continue to damage it at a faster rate than it can repair itself.

Tai Chi Chuan teaches us how the principles of relaxation, balance and body structure can help prevent injury and allow it to heal, naturally. Correct breathing, bodily posture and movement can help transform your body both externally and internally and reduce pain or eliminate it altogether.

Don't wear out your joints!

Not all joints are the same. Some naturally have a greater range of movement than others and some are only meant to bear weight stress in certain directions. Putting your joints under load the wrong way damages them. Over time this can go beyond repair. Tai Chi Chuan can show you how to move in the easiest, most efficient manner possible, dramatically reducing the stress on bone and cartilage and ensuring pain-free mobility.

Don't punish your body – nurture it!

You don't have to "push through the pain barrier" to exercise and greatly improve your physical condition and your health.

Tai Chi Chuan, taught according to the traditional principles that have proven tried and true over centuries, not only avoids hurting your body, it actively nurtures it to a state of naturally good health and robust physical condition.

There's an old saying that "Tai Chi Chuan gives you the pliability of a child, the strength of a lumberjack and the wisdom of a sage".

Take a long-term approach

It's just common sense. We're only born with one body and it has to last us a long time – our whole lifetime. And that lifetime is getting longer. We're an ageing population. Statistics say we can expect to live longer than our parents and grandparents. But there's living – and there's enjoying life! You can't enjoy your life, at any age, without good health and mobility.

Consistent practice of Tai Chi Chuan according to the timeless principles of the Art can help you enjoy better health, mobility and peace of mind no matter what your age. If you're planning on being around for the next 5, 10, 20, 50 or more years you'll need something to keep you in good health all the way!

Tai Chi is a skill, not just an exercise!

At Li Chi Hsiang school we use the analogy that learning Tai Chi Chuan is like learning a musical instrument, rather than just an exercise. Each time you come to class you learn something more, then you go away and practice it, a little each day, till it becomes part of you.

Tai Chi Chuan just needs a little consistent and mindful practice each day. The Tai Chi 'form' is a series of co-ordinated movements that gently but thoroughly exercises both the body and the mind. Like learning music it is challenging, enjoyable and fascinating.

Tai Chi Chuan is a skill for life – a long and healthy life.

If it feels good, do it!

If you could do a little something every day that doesn't take very long, but has incredible long-term health and fitness benefits and actually feels really good to do – would you do it?

That's one of the great benefits of Tai Chi Chuan: it feels so good to do it! Releasing tension from both the body and mind, moving and breathing in a co-ordinated, harmonious manner. That's why Tai Chi is known the world over as the 'moving meditation'.

How many other exercise 'systems' do you see people happily performing well into their 70s, 80s and 90s?

There's another saying about Tai Chi Chuan: "A little while to learn, a lifetime to master". But perhaps a better way of expressing it is: "... a longer lifetime to enjoy!"

The bottom line

To sum up, Tai Chi Chuan can help you:

Get rid of the stresses and tensions that are stealing your energy and holding you back.

• Develop balance and centredness

• Nurture your natural internal energy

• Learn how to make yourself feel better, every day

Enjoy life!
